Travel to São Paulo
Most citizens of Latin American origin will not need visas to travel to Brazil. However, Brazil does require visas of some foreign nationals. Please call your local Brazilian consulate to verify your status before traveling. There are two airports in São Paulo. Most international flights arrive in Guarulhos, which is roughly 1 hour away from the University of São Paulo by taxi. A few flights arrive in the city airport, Congonhas, which is roughly 25 minutes by taxi from the University. Both airports also have regular bus service to the city center, which will be less expensive than transportation by taxi.
Room & Board
The Summer School does not have the wherewithal to make housing arrangements for students. However, below we offer suggestions of reasonable boarding opportunities near the university. This list does not imply an endorsement by the Summer School, and students are recommended to take all possible care in booking their housing. There are many good options for housing in São Paulo, so we would encourage all students to look for options that are not very far from the USP campus. By clicking on this link, you will find a map of Sao Paulo, with a five kilometer radius around the building where all classes and lectures will be held. There are many good options within this area, and the suggestions below are merely intended to illustrate the variety of options available in close proximity to the University of São Paulo.
Hotels and Hostels
1) Spotlight Hotel. Many of our students used this hotel in 2010, and it was among the most highly recommended on our student evaluation forms for its cost-benefit ratio and proximity to campus.
2) Vila Madalena Hostel. Rua Francisco Leitão, 686.
3) Residenza Montovani. Rua Des. Eliseu Guilherme, 269.
Low-Cost Campus Housing
1) CEPEUSP. Very, very simple low-cost collective housing can be found at the CEPEUSP athletic facility, on-campus at the University of São Paulo. The rooms, restrooms, and showers at the CEPEUSP are collective, simple, and no-frills. Rooms house up to eighteen students in bunk beds, and include lockers for students’ personal belongings. If you stay at the CEPEUSP, plan to bring your own lock for the lockers, as well as linens and towels for your stay, and be prepared to follow the very strict instructions for arrival, since the reception area is only open from 7am to 5pm on weekends, and from 6:30am to 8pm on weekdays. The cost of the CEPEUSP is only R$15 a night. But during the period of the Summer School, they can only guarantee us a limited number of places. If you are interested, please send us an email, and we will provide you with further information about how to reserve your place. We cannot overemphasize, however, the very simple nature of the lodging. No food is provided, and the rooms are shared with strangers. You will need to reserve these lodgings as soon as possible, given the large number of visiting scholars and athletes during this time of year.
Taxi and Bus Transportation
Taxis in Sao Paulo are generally safe, especially if picked up at the hotel, and all of the taxi fares from the hotels listed here to the USP should be under R$25 one-way. Radio cabs are also available, and can be called for reservations. Some suggestions of such on-call taxi services follow:
1) Taxi Usetaxi 5583-2000
2) Taxi BatTaxi 3851-4268 or 3538-6900
Bus service is even less expensive, and information about bus routes can be found here.
